Statement on Pope Francis’ Motu Proprio

The Vatican’s new policy will be very helpful to the Church around the world in responding to allegations of sexual abuse. In many ways it affirms the practices that have already been in place in the U.S. and here in the Diocese of Providence for years. But it serves to remind the whole Church of our need to be very vigilant, transparent and accountable in dealing with the sin, and the crime, of sexual abuse. I am grateful to Pope Francis for this important initiative.
