Bishop Thomas J. Tobin and more than 60 pastors of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Providence are adding their voices to the growing number of those urging RIPTA to stop fare increases that are set to go into effect on January 1, 2017.
In a letter to RIPTA’s Board of Directors Chairman Wayne Kezirian, Bishop Tobin and more than 60 pastors are requesting that the new fare increases be rescinded, for fear they will impose an additional hardship to many of Rhode Island’s most vulnerable citizens including low income senior citizens and people with disabilities.
Pastors from the diocese stated, “We face daily many of those people who will suffer from this price increase. Their needs and concerns are valid and we believe a call for further review is crucial.”
Bishop Tobin and the pastors are asking that the RIPTA Board, the Governor’s office, and House and Senate leadership review the policy and stop the fare increases.
