Rev. John Joseph (“JD”) Duggan, 89, a priest of the Diocese of Ossory (Ireland) and longtime priest-in-residence at SS. John and Paul Parish, Coventry, died Thursday, November 4, 2021.
Born in Kilkenny, Ireland, son of the late Richard and Molly (Gorman) Duggan, he attended Ballyfacey National School, Waterford; and St. Kieran’s College, Kilkenny.
In preparation for the priesthood, he studied at St. Patrick’s College, Maynooth; the National University of Ireland; and Maynooth Pontifical University, Kildare. He was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Ossory on June 17, 1956 by Most Reverend John C. McQuaid, CSSp, in the Maynooth Pontifical University Chapel. .
From 1957 – 72, Father Duggan was assigned as Professor of Ancient Classics and Religion at St. Kieran’s College, Kilkenny.
In 1985, Father Duggan came to Rhode Island and provided sacramental ministry at Salve Regina University, Newport, for 10 years. From 1997 until his death, Father was in-residence at SS. John and Paul Parish, Coventry, where he provided Mass and sacramental assistance during that timeframe.
Calling hours will be on Wednesday, November 10, from 4 – 7pm in SS. John and Paul Church, 341 South Main Street, Coventry. A Mass for Vocations immediately will follow the calling hours at 7pm in SS. John and Paul Church.
A Concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial for the repose of Father’s soul will be offered on Thursday, November 11, at 11am at SS. John and Paul Church.
