Reverend Edmond P. Prendiville, 81, a senior priest of the Diocese of Providence died Thursday, October 24, 2019.
Born in County Kerry in Ireland, son of the late Maurice F. and Mary P. (Walsh) Prendiville, he attended the Salesian High School in Kilmurry N.S., Ireland and the Salesian College in Pallaskenry, County Limerick.
In preparation for the priesthood, he studied at St. Kieran College, Kilkenny, Ireland and was ordained for service in the Diocese of Providence at St. Mary Cathedral, Kilkenny on June 2, 1963 by Bishop P. Birch.
Father Prendiville served as assistant pastor at St. Mary Parish, Bristol (1963-65); St. Anthony Parish, Providence (1965-69); and at St. Joseph Parish in Newport (1969-72). From 1968 to 1972 he also served as a Chaplain in the U.S. Navy Reserve. In 1972 he became a Chaplain in the U.S. Navy, serving until his retirement from the Navy in 1992. Between 1993 and 1996 he made postgraduate studies at the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC.
After a year of sabbatical studies in Rome, Father Prendiville was released by the Diocese of Providence to serve in various dioceses, including the Diocese of Palm Beach, where he lived at the time of his death.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, October 30 at St. Ambrose Church, Deerfield Beach, Florida.
Burial will be in the chaplain section of Arlington National Cemetery, Washington, DC.
