Reverend Daniel M. Trainor, 83, Pastor Emeritus of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Parish, Providence, died Monday, August 5, 2019.
Born in Providence, Rhode Island, son of the late William and Mary (Martins) Trainor, he attended Assumption School and LaSalle Academy, both in Providence.
In preparation for the priesthood, he studied at Our Lady of Providence Seminary in Warwick, Rhode Island, and at St. Mary Seminary in Baltimore, Maryland. He was ordained a priest on May 27, 1961 in the Cathedral of SS. Peter and Paul in Providence by Bishop Russell J. McVinney.
After a summer assignment at St. Francis of Assisi Parish, Wakefield, Father Trainor served as assistant pastor at St. Rita Parish, Warwick (1961-62); St. Leo Parish, Pawtucket (1962-69); and St. Teresa Parish, Providence (1969-71).
From 1971 to 2007, Father Trainor was administrator, co-pastor, and then pastor of the Assumption Parish, Providence. In 1996, he made sabbatical studies at the Institute of Theology and Spirituality in Santa Barbara, California. In 2006, after more than 36 years of ministry at the Assumption Parish, he retired as Pastor Emeritus and moved to Regina Cleri Residence in Providence. In his final years, Father Trainor lived at St. John Vianney Residence, Providence, and at the St. Elizabeth Home, East Greenwich.
In addition to parish duties, Father served as Dean of Deanery 10 for three terms; was a member of the Council of Priests and of the College of Consultors (2000-2008); and as Secretary, Vice President and President of the West Elmwood Housing Development Corporation. He received several awards for his humanitarian services for refugees, especially those from Cambodia and Thailand.
Calling hours will be on Friday, August 9, from 3 – 8pm in the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church, 791 Potters Avenue, Providence.
A Concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial will be offered for the repose of Father’s soul on Saturday, August 10, at 10am at the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church.
