The sanctuary movement, providing a safe haven for immigrants and refugees, is gathering steam across the nation and here in Rhode Island. It is a movement that has a noble history and, in light of new challenges, deserves careful consideration today.
However, those promoting the sanctuary movement would have far more credibility if they applied the insight of Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York who said in a recent homily: “Can any of us be safe, can any of us claim a sanctuary anywhere, when the first and most significant sanctuary of them all, the mother’s womb protecting a tiny life, can be raided and ravaged?”
A consistent ethic of life seeks to protect unborn children, as well as immigrants and refugees. The Catholic Church, in our nation and certainly here in Rhode Island, has given a powerful example of that commitment!
