(PROVIDENCE RI)—The Roman Catholic Diocese of Providence will present awards in several categories to 12 individuals and 3 groups for service to the Church and community at a dinner on Wednesday, May 16 at 6:00 p.m. at the Twin River Event Center in Lincoln. Proceeds from the event will benefit diocesan Hispanic Ministries, which provides support, guidance and assistance to the Hispanic community.
The Lumen Gentium Award recognizes those who have provided outstanding service to their parish, the diocese and/or the local community. A committee of clergy and laity reviews each nominee and submits its recommendations to the Bishop for his approval.
“These individuals, through their selfless efforts, represent outstanding examples of Christian service here in the diocese, said Bishop Thomas J. Tobin. This award provides a unique opportunity to acknowledge those who work tirelessly in service to the Church and ask for nothing in return.”
This year more than 100 nominations were accepted for consideration in nine categories -- Administration & Stewardship, Community Service and Charitable Outreach, Catholic Education, Communications, Distinguished Catholic Youth, Evangelization, Parish Service, Public Service and Respect Life.
Since 2013, when the first awards were presented, the annual Lumen Gentium awards banquet has raised more than $300,000 in support of ministries including Catholic elder services, Emmanuel House and Catholic Education.
