(PROVIDENCE) - This year marks the 100th anniversary of the appearance of Mary to three shepherd children in the town of Fatima in Portugal. In honor of this historic event, Bishop Thomas J. Tobin has declared that the diocese will devote a special Year of Mary with events throughout the year.
On Saturday, May 13, the day of the first apparition, the Diocese will observe the occasion with an outdoor procession with the statue of Our Lady of Fatima beginning at 11:00 am in Cathedral Square followed by multi-lingual recitation of the Holy Rosary. Bishop Tobin will then celebrate Mass at 12:05 in the Cathedral.
The Centenary of the Apparitions took place between May 13 and October 13 of 1917. For six months, on the 13th day, Our Lady appeared to three shepherd children and entrusted to them a message from Heaven of hope and peace in our lives and for the world.
“The Fatima centenary invites us to hear and heed with renewed attention the message of our Blessed Mother at Fatima – the call to conversion and repentance for sins, the invitation to intense prayer, especially the Holy Rosary, and devotion to her Immaculate Heart,” said Bishop Tobin. “Let us celebrate well as we honor our Blessed Mother, seek her assistance in our daily lives, and learn from her timeless example of faith, trust and love.”
