(PROVIDENCE, R.I.) The Most Reverend Thomas J. Tobin, Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Providence, announced today that the diocese stands ready to assist federal employees in Rhode Island affected by the on-going government shut-down.
“It is my hope that by offering this special assistance to the affected individuals and families through our ministries, we can somehow provide some assistance,” said Bishop Tobin. “It is very unfortunate that the government shut down has lasted this long. I urge both sides of the impasse to come together to reach an agreement which will end the hardship felt by so many.”
Several diocesan ministries are providing this additional support in the form of gift cards to local supermarkets, gas cards, prescription drug assistance, heating assistance through our diocesan program “Keep the Heat On”, diapers and baby food through our St. Gabriel’s Call program, as well as child care through the Cabrini Fund.
Federal employees in Rhode Island impacted by the shutdown may call (401) 421-7833 ext. 207 for help through our programs. Appropriate documentation should be provided.
