(PROVIDENCE RI) – A Mass of Thanksgiving will be held in honor of the Most Rev. Thomas J. Tobin, Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Providence, for his 25th anniversary of his ordination as a bishop. The special Mass will take place on December 17 at 1:00 pm in the Cathedral of SS. Peter & Paul in Providence. A reception will follow in Cathedral Hall.
“I am grateful the Lord sent us such a bishop to confront the many, complex challenges the Church faces today with his strong, loving and wise stewardship of the gifts and ministry God has en¬trusted to him these 25 years,” said Msgr. Albert A. Kenney, Vicar General/Moderator of the Curia.
Several bishops will be attending this celebration including Auxiliary Bishop Robert C. Evans, former bishops Louis E. Gelineau and Robert E. Mulvee, native Rhode Islanders Salvatore R. Matano, Diocese of Rochester, New York and Robert J. McManus, Diocese of Worcester, Massachusetts, and Walker Nickless from the Diocese of Sioux City, Iowa.
Bishop Tobin was ordained a priest in July 1973 for the Diocese of Pittsbugh where he served in various parishes. He was appointed administrative secretary in 1984 and later became Vicar General and General Secretary. In 1992, Pope John Paul II appointed him Auxiliary Bishop of Pittsburg. Then in 1996, he was installed as the fourth bishop of Youngstown, Ohio. In 2005, Pope John Paul II named him the eighth bishop of Providence.
