Black History Month is an annual celebration during February, of achievements by African Americans and is a time for recognizing their central role in U.S. history. It is an excellent time to learn about Black Catholic history. To celebrate the contributions of Black Catholics to the Catholic tradition, November is observed as Black Catholic History Month. There are six African American men and women whose causes for canonization (official process of declaration of sainthood) are open, and we encourage you to invoke their intercession, especially for our African American brothers and sisters and for the cause of racial justice, and to pray for the advancement of their causes for canonization. We also encourage you to learn about the work of the Office of Black Catholic Ministry in the Diocese of Providence, which works to build a solid foundation for leadership with Black Catholics throughout Rhode Island by reaching out to inform, educate and share their rich spiritual heritage with the whole Church. The office celebrates Back Catholics' unique cultural diversity as members of the Catholic Church through evangelization.
