Diocese to Present Annual Awards for Service to Church/Community Individuals, Couples and Organizations will be honored at a Dinner to Benefit Catholic Youth Ministries
Wednesday, May 15, 6:00 p.m. -- Twin River Event Center, Lincoln
(LINCOLN RI)—The Roman Catholic Diocese of Providence will host a benefit dinner where individuals, couples and organizations will be honored with the Lumen Gentium Award for their service to the Catholic Church and their community. The event will be held on Wednesday, May 15 at 6:00 p.m. at the Twin River Event Center in Lincoln.
The Lumen Gentium Award recognizes those who have made a difference in the lives of others, in their parish, the diocese or their local community. Lumen Gentium, the namesake of the awards, means ‘Light of the Nations’ and refers to a principal document promulgated by Pope Paul VI in 1964, during the Second Vatican Council that describes the life and nature of the Church.
This year more than 100 nominations were accepted for consideration in nine categories; Administration, Community Service and Charitable Outreach, Catholic Education, Evangelization/Communications, Distinguished Catholic Youth, Friend of the Diocese, Parish Service, Public Service and Respect Life. A committee of clergy and laity, chaired by Msgr. Albert Kenney, diocesan vicar general, reviewed each nominee, and then submitted recommendations to the Bishop.
Proceeds from the event will benefit Catholic Youth Ministries, which provides leadership training, evangelization, faith formation, competitive athletic opportunities, retreats and a summer day camp.
Since 2013, the annual Lumen Gentium awards dinner has raised more than $450,000 in support of ministries including Catholic elder services, Emmanuel House Homeless Shelter, parish food pantries, Catholic Education and Multi-Cultural Ministries.
