The summit of the Liturgical Year is the Easter Triduum — from the evening of Holy Thursday to Easter Sunday. This photo showcase is a glimpse of the spirit of this most Holy Week for Catholics in the Diocese of Providence.
PROVIDENCE — A bill before the Rhode Island General Assembly seeks to legalize new burial practices that run counter to Church teachings. Bill HB 6045, also known as “A Bill Relating to Businesses and Professions — Funeral Director/Embalmer And Funeral Service Establishments,” was introduced by Rep. Michelle McGaw (D-District 71 Little Compton, Tiverton, Portsmouth) on March 3. The bill deals with certain new forms of disposal of dead human bodies.
In any cemetery in Rhode Island, you will be sure to find some visitors at the graves of their loved ones. They might be praying for them or just stopping to recall their influence on their lives. For those who have ever made such a visit, you know what consolation it brings. Honoring the past reminds us of the value of the present moment. Honoring those who came before us — and having a place to pay them respect — conforms to the dignity of the human person.
PROVIDENCE — Silvio Cuellar, who has served in the Diocese of Providence for nearly 25 years as the longtime editor of El Catolico de Rhode Island, the Spanish language version of Rhode Island Catholic, and leader of Hispanic ministry, has moved on to serve the work of the Catholic Church on a national level.
NASONVILLE — One Mass and a visit to the confessional. These two simple things are all that is required for God to “pour out a whole ocean of grace upon those souls who approach the fount of My mercy,” on April 16, known as Divine Mercy Sunday.
“Those that can give up essential liberty to gain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety” (Benjamin Franklin). This was said by one of America’s founding fathers, and reveals the values this country was founded on. America’s freedom was not free. Brave patriots died to give their posterity the right to liberty, happiness, and most importantly, life. This right to life is a gift that should never be traded in for anything else, even what seems temporarily comfortable. But abortion does just this — it gives an individual a supposed “fix” for their so-called “problem” at the cost of an innocent life. And this exchange of life for the preservation of one’s own plans is a detriment to the land of the free.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Diocese of Providence: A blessed and happy Easter to you! We recall that when the holy Apostles and the devout women went to the tomb on Easter morning, they found that the tomb was empty and they were greeted by angels with the question: “Why do you seek the Living One among the dead? He is not here, but he has been raised.” (Lk 24:5-6) That question, and that statement, have resounded through the ages, and they give the world, and they give us new hope, new strength and the promise of new and eternal life!
An authentic celebration of Easter, the Resurrection of Christ, is such a world-changing, life-changing event that it should inspire in us a tidal wave of emotion, and the growth of important virtues. Among the most prominent of those virtues are hope, peace and joy.

BURRILLVILLE — Before the birth of her grandson, Beverly Munyon prayed for a healthy child, never imagining the difficulties in store for their family when that prayer did not come true. When her grandson Samuel faced life-threatening health conditions and emergency surgeries at mere days old, she never could have imagined how much good God could bring out of such suffering.
There’s a reason it’s called “Holy Week” and that’s because in these days we will enter into the deepest mysteries of the Christian Faith. In this week we will observe and actually share in the suffering, death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ, the events that redeemed mankind, reconciled us to God, and gave us a new beginning with the hope of eternal life. This week should be a retreat for us, a time when as much as possible we set aside our normal routines and turn our undivided attention to Jesus.
